At least two televised debates are scheduled between Rep. Tom Perriello and Robert Hurt, his Republican opponent, in the 5th District congressional race.
Neither debate is likely to include Jeffrey Clark of Danville, the independent candidate on the ballot.
Clark won’t be in the two debates unless he gets support from 10 percent or more of voters in public polls, under terms agreed to by the Perriello and Hurt campaigns.
Hurt has refused to participate with Clark in debates up to this point, and was absent from a forum in Charlottesville where Clark appeared alongside Perriello and an empty chair for Hurt on Aug. 11.
Perriello challenged Hurt to appear for the debates, and spent most of the past two months arguing that Clark should be included in them. Clark has said his goal in the race is to take votes away from Hurt.
One of the debates is scheduled for Oct. 19 in Charlottesville, to be broadcast by WCAV-TV Channel 19, and sponsored by the Albemarle County League of Women Voters.
Another debate is scheduled two days later, Oct. 21, in Danville.
The second debate is to be broadcast by WSET Channel 13 in Lynchburg and WVIR NBC 29 in Charlottesville. Sponsors are The Danville Register & Bee and the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Jessica Barba, spokeswoman for Perriello’s campaign, said negotiations still were under way for a possible third debate to be broadcast by WSLS-TV Channel 10 in Roanoke.
Barba said the Perriello campaign was still hoping for a fourth debate, possibly to be carried on WDBJ-TV Channel 7 in Roanoke.
