With the retreating of the harsh weather of the past winter and the coming of spring, work on the decorative fencing is nearly completed at the Danville Pittsylvania Veterans Memorial at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.

Joe King, Danville’s interim city manager, was on hand Tuesday to see the fence and get a personal tour of the memorial with Davis Newman, who began the drive to build the memorial.

“It’s quite impressive,” King said after the tour. “The amount of volunteer work has to be an amazing number of hours.”

Installing the fencing should be completed in another day and two, according to Neal Herndon, owner of the Rocking “H” Fence Co., which is installing the chain link fence to the rear of the memorial and the decorative steel fence in front.

The gates will be installed and the job completed the first of next week, Herndon said.

With the completion of the fence, the construction of Veterans Memorial will be finished.

The fence was made possible through grants from the Danville Lions Club Foundation; the J.T. Minnie Maude Charitable Trust; the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 647; and donations from numerous individuals, according to a news release.

After completion, the total cost of the project will be approximately $110,000.

The contract for the construction was awarded to Hughes & Atkins Construction Co. with Garrett Hughes and Danny Karnes with their crew performing the brick-laying tasks and Rocking “H” the fence.

The project was also supported by the City of Danville Public Works Department and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

Now that the fencing is completed, Newman said he hopes that brick sales, which have flattened during the construction and winter, will pick up again.

“We’ve got 6,000 engraved bricks, which is amazing, but we have room for a little more than 13,000 bricks in the walkway,” Newman said.

Bricks to honor any veteran in any service at any time — from the Revolutionary War to the present — can be purchased for $125. The bricks will be engraved with the name of the veteran at the brickway.

Brick forms are available at the Veterans Memorial or from the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region at 541 Loyal St., by writing P.O. Box 1039, by calling (434) 793-0884 or at www.cfdrr.org.

The cost of the bricks is tax deductible. Donations to the Veterans Memorial Endowment Fund for the perpetual care of the Veterans Memorial may also be sent to address above.
