The Eden Preservation Society is gearing up for a series of fund-raisers to help support restoring the foundation of the Leaksville Cotton Mill. It is located at 422 Church Street at Gov. Morehead Park in the Spray Section of Eden.
The Eden Preservation society purchased the property in 1996 and established the Gov. Morehead Park. The entire structure was demolished in 1992 after local preservationists tried to save the property and failed. Only the original stone foundation still stands.
The stone foundation is in need of stabilization and restoration to help save the historic structure. Funding is also being sought to help with landscaping and maintenance of the park. Phyllis Stickles, president of the Eden Preservation Society, said they don’t have a definite figure of how much funds need to be raised.
“We are still working with an engineer to see what the final figures are going to be, but we do know it’s going to be costly,” Stickles said. “The costs are coming from the large size and weight of the boulders needed to repair it, and the heavy materials needed.”
The first fund-raising event will be held Nov. 15 at Pace-Stone on Washington Street in the Olde Leaksville Shopping District.
