The Danville Area Humane Society is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information about two recent cases of mistreated dogs.
Paulette Dean, executive director of the Humane Society, said a dog was shot Nov. 14 near Halifax Road.
The dog, a setter-mix, had apparently broken away from the chain it had been kept on for a year at a home on Halifax Road, and ran through the neighborhood, Dean said.
“The dog was unsocialized and scared,” Dean said in a news release.
Dean said the dog was shot at about 4 p.m., and the owner called the police later in the evening. The owner released the dog to the Humane Society, where it was euthanized due to gunshot injuries, Dean said.
The second case the Humane Society is seeking information about occurred Friday, when an elderly, male rat terrier-type dog was found at a green trash box on Kentuck Road in Pittsylvania County.
Dean said the dog had apparently been abandoned at the trash box, and was emaciated and very ill.
“It was so sad; he was almost dead when he was found,” Dean said. “He was in really bad shape.”
Dean said the dog was humanely euthanized.
Anyone with information about either case is asked to call the Humane Society at (434) 799-5306. Dean said all calls will remain confidential.
