National Weather Service predicts record Dan River level

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The National Weather Service is predicting record flooding for the Dan River in Danville, cresting at 30.5 feet, which would be about two inches above the old record set in 1996.

Appalachian Power is increasing the discharge of water from the Leesville Dam into the Staunton River this morning to combat rising water levels at Smith Mountain Lake and the Leesville reservoir.

Appalachian Power plans to continue monitoring the river level downstream and will adjust the dam discharge as needed, the company said in a news release.

The company asks everyone on the lake and river to be careful boating or swimming.

For specific flow and elevation readings, go to the power company’s Web site or call (540) 985-2767.
