Madison woman killed by falling tree

A tree falling onto a moving vehicle claimed the life of a Madison woman and injured her toddler Wednesday evening in Rockingham County.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 28-year-old Terra Lyn Swinney, of Madison, was driving down Witty Road at about 7:35 p.m. Wednesday when her 2004 Nissan was struck by a falling tree. The impact killed Swinney. Her 3-year-old son received minor injuries but was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.

The highway patrol said Swinney was wearing a seat belt.
