Dog saved from the Dan River

From staff reports

Employees from the Danville Area Humane Society pulled a woman’s dog out of the Dan River Thursday morning.

The dog was taken to a veterinarian and is being treated for minor injures, said Paulette Dean, the humane society’s executive director. Dean said the dog needs water, food and rest because it is very thin and weak.

Dean said that the dog is available for adoption. Its owner told Dean that she did not want the dog back.

An animal control officer called the shelter about 11 a.m., Dean said. He told them that someone spotted a dog in the river.

Dean said the employees closed the shelter and went to find the dog. They spotted it between the shelter and the American Legion baseball field. The dog had burrowed into leaves and mud under a tree on the river’s bank.

Employees went down the cliff, Dean said, and dug the animal out.

She said, “I am so grateful that people saw him.”
