Goblins, witches and other scary creatures roamed around Market Square on Saturday for Halloween Happenings, sponsored by the city of Reidsville.
Although the skies threatened showers, dozens of residents participated in the event. Among the festivities planned were a pumpkin-carving contest, a costume contest, cooking contest and performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” by the Academy of Dance.
Maahqeez McClinton was prepared for the costume contest decked out in a unique getup. He was dressed as a highway. With toy cars, a traffic cone and “road kill” glued to his black sweat suit, the 10-year-old was ready to compete.
“I wanted to do something different,” he said. His mother, Tonya Mills, said a lot of thought was put into her son’s costume and she proudly explained every detail of his outfit.
“We used Krazy Glue,” she said. But the three-dimensional orange cone kept falling off. “So I put a little cement. I told him to just stay away from flames,” she said with a laugh.
Allison Sellars was manning the pumpkin-carving contest table. As she passed out a plastic pumpkin bucket, she asked participants to make donations to the Reidsville Soup Kitchen.
The all-afternoon event was scheduled to wrap up at 5:30 following a performance of Mulan by the Theatre Guild of Rockingham County.
