DANVILLE — A wreck Saturday morning claimed the lives of two Southside residents, while a tractor accident killed a Pittsville man.
The first accident occurred at the intersection of Old Richmond Road and Kentuck Road in Pittsylvania County at about 11:20 a.m., according to Virginia State Police communications supervisor S.G. Thompson.
Alice Kates Adkins, 73, of Danville, and passenger Violet Lines Kates, 91, of South Boston, were killed when their vehicle, a 1995 Mazda Protégé, was struck by a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am.
Adkins was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, Thompson said. Kates was transported to Danville Regional Medical Center, where she died at 1:03 p.m. Both victims were wearing their seat belts.
Thompson said the Pontiac traveled through the intersection and struck the Mazda. The identity of the driver of the Pontiac has not been released. There were no other injuries reported, Thompson said.
No charges have been filed. The Virginia State Police is continuing the investigation.
In a second incident, Michael McCurry, 43, of Pittsville, was killed in a tractor accident Saturday evening.
According to Thompson, McCurry was mowing next to an embankment on Route 773, when the 1947 Ford farm tractor he was riding rolled over and landed on him.
