About $5.5 million in federal stimulus funds will help pay for three bridge projects in Pittsylvania County, and an additional $200,000 will go toward Danville’s transit system.
The money is part of almost $37 million in stimulus funds for roads, bridges and transit systems in the 5th District, Rep. Tom Perriello’s office announced Tuesday.
“Transportation investments are some of the smartest we can make in our communities because they create jobs now and lay a strong foundation for economic recovery,” Perriello said in a statement. “We must have reliable infrastructure to be able to compete in the global economy.”
The three projects in Pittsylvania County include bridges over bypasses, said Perriello Press Secretary Jessica Barba. They include about $1.69 million for a bridge at U.S. 29 Business over the U.S. 29 bypass, $2.1 million for bridge at Route 685 over the U.S. 29 bypass and $1.69 million for a bridge at Davis Road over the U.S. 29 bypass.
“We’re just committed to making sure this recovery package is working for the 5th District,” Barba said Tuesday.
Paula Jones, spokeswoman with the Virginia Department of Transportation, said the three projects are for superstructure replacement. The projects will entail raising the bridges about a foot because of clearance issues for large trucks, Jones said. The bridges are functionally obsolete, Jones said.
“They’re just too low,” she said, adding that trucks have hit them in the past.
