Addressing local residents, statewide Democratic candidates stressed the importance of bringing much-needed jobs to Virginia during a meet-and-greet session Sunday afternoon.
“We must make sure we succeed at creating jobs in the commonwealth,” gubernatorial candidate Brian Moran said during the event at the home of Jim and Susan Daniel.
Moran was joined by lieutenant governor hopefuls Pat Edmonson, Jon Bowerbank, Jody Wagner and Mike Signer.
Danville Democratic Committee Chairwoman Sheila Baynes said the event was held to give residents a chance to learn about the candidates.
“We have some really good people running for these positions,” Baynes said.
After mingling with the crowd, each candidate was given the floor to introduce themselves and talk about their campaigns.
A former prosecutor, Moran said his campaign is one of public service and vowed to fight for the people of Virginia.
-- Pat Edmonson, the vice-chair and former outreach director of the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee and sitting member of the Virginia Beach City School Board, said her candidacy brings a “progressive voice” to the party.
“I bring a very unique vantage point to the lieutenant governor race,” she said, touting her experience working with at-risk youth. “I’m all about service.”
-- Jon Bowerbank, owner of an energy services company in Southwest Virginia, called himself “the businessman in the campaign.” He said bringing jobs to the state and increasing the use of green energy were at the top of his agenda.
-- Jody Wagner, who began her campaign in Danville in August, is a former corporate lawyer and, like the other candidates, said she is determined to bring new jobs to Virginia.
“Rejuvenating the economy is critical,” Wagner said, adding that companies must look beyond the traditional means of doing business.
“We’re gonna have to be more innovative,” she said.
-- Vowing to make the position of lieutenant governor a public advocate, candidate Mike Signer said his campaign is focused on “social justice and economic fairness.”
“It’s about something better than us,” Signer, who was deputy counselor for former Gov. Mark Warner, said. “It’s about Virginia.”
