A volleyball jamboree is being held March 28 at Averett University’s Grant Center for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.
Charlene Presley, of the Stonewall Therapeutic Recreation Center, said the event might lead to volleyball becoming a sport at the Special Olympics if enough participants sign up.
This is a unified sport, Presley said, which pairs an able-bodied player with a disabled player — who will be members of Averett’s women’s volleyball team for this event. Coach Danny Miller will be on hand to teach participants how to play.
Players will participate in a skills clinic from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and from 2:30 to 5 p.m., they will socialize with the team, dance to music provided by a DJ and enjoy snacks.
“We keep getting asked for more things for the disabled to do,” Presley said. “Right now, there’s just track events and bowling, which is from September through March. We hope to get a new sport in the area.”
Anyone, of any age or disability, from Danville or Pittsylvania County is welcome to participate in the volleyball jamboree, Presley said. Participants can sign up by calling the Stonewall Therapeutic Recreation Center at (434) 799-5199.
Presley said that if the volleyball jamboree works out, organizers will be looking for volunteers, coaches and partners for more events.
The jamboree is a combined partnership involving Danville Parks, Recreation & Tourism, Averett University, Danville ARC and Special Olympics.
Presley said the event is free, and the public is invited to come and cheer.
Averett University’s Grant Center is located on the North Campus on Mount Cross Road.
