A Mayodan man has been charged with taking indecent liberties with a 12-year-old child.

Kevin Dwayne Gusler, 26, of 276 Brewer Road, was charged with indecent liberties with a child and second degree kidnapping on Wednesday evening after the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an incident that occurred in Madison involving Gulser and the child.

According to a narrative from the sheriff’s office, the child was visiting friends when he accepted an offer to go fishing with one of his friends’ acquaintances, Gusler. After spending a short while at the river, Gusler took the child back to his house and committed “lewd and lascivious acts.” The child resisted the acts but was overpowered by Gusler. Gusler and the child left the residence and Gusler continued to make unwanted advances toward the child while in the car. The child took a baseball bat from inside the car and defended himself. Gusler stopped the car and the child, armed with the baseball bat, got out of the car and refused to get back into the car. The child later reported the incident to family.

Detective Dan Hardy charged Gusler and found that there were outstanding criminal summons pending against Gusler for injury to personal property and animal cruelty. Gusler’s bond was set at $250,000.
