If you’re looking for your first home, this is the time to buy.
Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th District, will hold a news conference in Danville on Saturday with new homebuyers J.C. Sells and Mariah Blankenship, along with local realtors to encourage residents to take advantage of the $8,000 tax break for first-time homebuyers.
“This tax break provides a big boost for first-time homebuyers,” Perriello said in a statement. “If you’ve been considering buying a home, 2009 may be the year that makes sense for you financially, while also helping you to be part of America’s economic recovery.”
Perriello will meet at Sells and Blankenship’s home in Danville to promote the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which includes the tax break for buyers closing before Nov. 30. Sells, an accountant, and Blankenship, a teacher at Tunstall High School, are engaged and recently purchased their first home with the help of the credit.
“We’re getting married in August and we figured the interest rates were about as low as we’d probably ever see them,” Sells, 26, said. “With the tax credits and everything, it seemed like a logical thing to do.”
Sells has lived in Danville since he was a child and Blankenship, 24, is a Danville native. The couple closed in February, but Sells said he has not yet moved in.
“We love it,” Sells said. “It’s great. It’s nice to have a home of our own, which I haven’t gotten to enjoy as much as she has yet.”
According to the National Association of Realtors, pending homes sales in the United States jumped 6.7 percent from March to April — increasing for the third month in a row — thanks to the tax credit and record-low mortgage interest rates.
