Danville City Council will vote on whether to approve a $25,000 Community Block Development Grant to the House of Hope homeless shelter during its regular meeting tonight.
The organization has asked for the funds so it can make renovations to its new location on Ridge Street to meet City Code requirements without using money from its operating budget.
Council will also vote on whether to support a Regional Industrial Facility Authority proposal to line up the first tenant for the city/county mega park.
RIFA wants to call the park “Southern Virginia Energy Park,” and is working to bring American Municipal Power in as the first signed tenant. AMP, which as previously partnered with Danville Utilities and currently provides most of the city’s electric power, would build a new natural gas-fired electric power plant in the southwestern section of the park.
Other items on the agenda include:
- Accepting $52,811 from the Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services Board for the city’s Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism for its enrichment program and expanded summer program. This money must be matched by $48,559 in local funds;
- Accepting $100,000 in Virginia Department of Aviation funds to maintain the Danville Regional Airport’s grounds and runways. The funds can be used for pavement repair, tree obstruction removal and grounds equipment, and require a $25,000 local match; and
- Appropriation of $250,008 in 2008 Department of Transportation funds for improvements at Crossing at the Dan. Parking, walkways, bicycle paths and overall site improvement to accommodate the new theater to be constructed next to the Science Center are included in the plan. The city will be required to provide a $62,501 local match.
In the work session immediately following the regular meeting, City Council will be updated on the Danville Science Center’s theater project, and begin planning for its Aug. 22 Strategic Planning Session.
Danville City Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month, in its chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building on Patton Street. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.
