Commonweath’s Attorney William H. Fuller III has announced he will be retiring at the end of this term. Fuller has been elected to 10 terms as the Commonwealth’s Attorney and has served steadily since 1970.
This term expires in December and he said Thursday he will not be running for re-election.
“This is my 40th year and I feel it’s time to go, time for a change,” Fuller said.
The Danville native said he appreciated the confidence his constituents have shown in him.
“I grew up in Danville and never wanted to be anywhere else,” Fuller said. “This position allowed me to stay here; I love this area.”
He began his career as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Danville in 1966, then went into
private practice briefly before running for commonwealth’s attorney in 1969 and taking office in 1970.
Though the job meant sacrificing many nights, weekends and holidays, he said being elected Commonwealth’s Attorney for the past 40 years “far exceeded my boyhood dreams.”
Fuller credits his staff for his success, noting that they too “sacrificed their time beyond the call of duty.”
“Without these fine employees, I could not have done my job,” Fuller said.
Fuller said he is not sure what he will to do next, but said he will still be involved in the community.
“I’ll still be here, and will help in any way I can,” Fuller said.
