Santa Claus came a wee bit early for God’s Storehouse.
Becky Wales, executive director of the local food bank, announced Monday that a donation of $164,000 from the Hughes Memorial Foundation has put the group over the top of its capital campaign.
“The Hughes Memorial Foundation does things for the benefit of children, and once we heard how many children are being fed by God’s Storehouse, we wanted to be of assistance to them so they could help even more,” said Linda Stegall, executive director of the foundation.
God’s Storehouse had been trying to raise $665,000 by Jan. 8 to purchase the former Danville Chrysler building on Memorial Drive and expand their space.
“We are so grateful the community has supported us to purchase the building,” Wales said. “We are grateful for every gift, from the $2 that clients who wanted to participate in the fundraising venture gave us to the individuals who gave larger gifts. They are all important and helped us reach our goal.”
Beside the Hughes Memorial Foundation gift, the Kiwanis Club of Danville Foundation donated $65,000; Danville awarded a $50,000 Community Development Block Grant; and numerous churches gave $10,000 to $15,000 donations.
An anonymous donor also donated $1 for every two raised, resulting in the donor paying for one-third the cost of the building, or $222,000.
Malcom Huckabee, chair of the individual gifts committee, called the gift “marvelous.”
“God’s Storehouse ventured out in faith, and faith has really been rewarded by this contribution from the foundation,” he said. “The donation comes from a foundation that has worked on faith and ministered in faith from the beginning.”
Wales cautions, however, that although they are grateful they have reached this goal, the organization still needs to raise approximately $400,000 more to pay for the necessary renovations to the building.
