A North Carolina concert promoter may face federal charges in addition to his local indictments in defrauding the Danville Harvest Jubilee Association of $85,000.

John Burton Vick Jr., 36, is charged locally with two counts of obtaining money by false pretenses.

A Danville Circuit Court judge continued Vick’s court date Tuesday. Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Newman said he didn’t want to jeopardize a possible federal case by starting Vick’s trial. Federal authorities couldn’t bring a case against Vick once the Danville trial began, according to court documents.

“We have no problem letting the feds look at it,” Newman said.

Judge David Melesco set the trial for Jan. 5.

Vick and his attorney spoke with prosecutors about the federal case, which is related to the charges Vick faces in Danville.

Federal prosecutors have not charged Vick yet, though that may change after Wednesday’s grand jury proceedings in the federal Eastern District of North Carolina, where investigators filed a June search warrant for Vick’s business, Radio Media Productions.

Investigators searched the business at 104 W. Queen St. in Edenton, N.C., on June 18 and seized three laptops, a desktop and documents found in a backpack, briefcase, trash bags and file cabinets.
