A pit bull attacking other dogs died after being tasered by police Wednesday morning, according to a news release from the Danville Police Department.
At 8:22 a.m. officers went to the intersection of Kinzer Avenue and Central Street after receiving a 911 call about a dog chasing people on the street. Police found a pit bull running loose and learned that the owner had already pepper sprayed it, according to the release.
Officers managed to get the dog chained behind its owner’s house at 213 Kinzer Ave. Three other pit bulls also were chained there.
But as the officers left the area, the pit bull got loose and attacked one of the other chained dogs, according to the release. Police used pepper spray to stop the attack, and the dog ran away. A family member arrived and offered to retrieve the dog, but before he could, the pit bull attacked another one of the chained dogs. The family member couldn’t separate the dogs, and police tasered both of them.
The chained dog recovered, but the attacking dog died within seconds, according to the news release.
The Danville Area Human Society seized two of the chained pit bulls. A family member took the third chained dog to receive treatment for its wounds.
Paulette Dean, executive director of the humane society, said the two dogs are being treated at a veterinarian clinic.
Derrick Peatross, 27, was charged with four counts of having an unlicensed dog and three counts of having an unvaccinated dog.
Dean said the Wednesday call was not the first time she’s seen Peatross.
“I have seized dogs from him in the past,” she said. “He has always opted to turn the dogs over to us, rather than go to court about it.”
Officers went to the same intersection earlier in the morning after a 911 caller said a pit bull was chasing children who were at a bus stop. Offi-cers couldn’t find the dog at that time, the release stated.
