GRETNA — Emergency crews airlifted a contract worker who was hit by a car on U.S. 29 at about 11:45 a.m. Monday, said Sgt. C.W. Owen of the Virginia State Police.

James Wainwright, of Hurt, has been charged with reckless driving in the incident, Owen said.

The Chevy Lumina he was driving ran off the right side of the highway, hit a guardrail, then hit the Winterville, N.C., man. He was picking up trash where his business was mowing.

The Lumina also hit a pickup truck that was on the highway’s shoulder, pushing it into the guardrail.

The victim was airlifted to Lynchburg General Hospital, where he is being treated. The extent of his injuries were not known at press time.
