MAYODAN – The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a Mayodan man following the report of an armed assault Thursday evening.
Warrants have been obtained for Mark Tracy Hairston, 43, of 127 Cupcake Trail in Mayodan on charges of first degree kidnapping, assault on a female, assault by pointing a gun and communicating threats. The Sheriff’s Office considers Hairston to be armed and dangerous.
Hairston’s wife, Mary, called 911 about 7:10 p.m. Thursday after fleeing to a neighbor’s residence. Mary Hairston reported she and her husband were involved in a domestic dispute when he hit her, pulled gun and threatened to use it.
Mary Hairston told deputies she grabbed her phone and ran outside, but Mark Hairston pulled out the phone line, forcing her to go to a neighbor’s house to call for help.
When deputies arrived at the Hairston’s home, they believed he was inside the house, armed and intending to harm himself.
With assistance from the Mayodan Police Department, deputies surrounded the house and began to evacuate neighbors as a safety precaution. The Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team arrived and later determined Hairston had fled the area before deputies arrived.
Also assisting with the incident were the Madison Police Department, N.C. Highway Patrol, Madison-Rockingham Rescue Squad and Mayodan Fire Department.
Mark Hairston is described as a 43-year-old black male, 6-foot tall and weighing 155 pounds. Anyone with information to help locate him is asked to call 911, the R.C. Sheriff’s Office at 634-3232, or Crime Stoppers at 349-9683.
