A Charlotte, N.C. man is in custody on drug and firearm charges, according to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Mike Taylor said Tyler Daniel Bethel, 39, of 7539 Coffey Creek Drive in Charlotte is charged with the manufacture, sale and possession of a controlled substance of cocaine and possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance. The incident happened Wednesday. Bethel previously lived at 58 Hughes St. in Danville.
Bethel was stopped by Deputies Rick Mayo, Justin Nelson, Cpl. Kevin Wells and Investigator William Chaney in the Walnut Creek and Mill Creek Road area about 1 a.m.
Taylor said Bethel was operating a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe and he was alone at the time of the arrest. Deputies found a .45 caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun along with ammunition, the sheriff said.
Taylor said deputies found five individually wrapped plastic baggies, all of which contained cocaine, near the vehicle.
Bethel is waiting for his preliminary hearing and is being held without bond in the Pittsylvania County Jail. Taylor said Bethel could get up to 40 years in prison and a $500,000 fine on the possession charge if he's convicted.
