Authorities are searching for the driver of a pickup truck driven into a ditch Tuesday afternoon in Caswell County, N.C., ejecting three people from the truck before it was left abandoned with a Chihuahua inside.
North Carolina Highway Patrol first responded to the incident, which occurred at about 3 p.m. on N.C. 57 near Dotmond Road in Caswell County.
A witness, who had reportedly been traveling behind the vehicle since it left Hyco Lake, said the pickup went into the ditch and all three of the passengers traveling in the back were ejected from the truck’s bed.
The driver got the vehicle out of the ditch, drove back and saw the victims lying in the ditch and took off, according to the witness.
Trooper Greg Ingram said the victims — two men and a woman — were hurt, but conscious and alert when police arrived. They are being treated at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Ingram said a man was driving the truck and a female passenger was traveling inside the pickup with him.
The truck was found in Virginia, about a mile and a half north of the North Carolina line, on Route 62.
Both the driver and passenger were gone. The Chihuahua found in the truck has been turned over to animal control officers.
At 6 p.m., Ingram said he was heading to Danville Regional to interview the victims, whose names have not been released.
The trooper said the driver and the other passenger are still at-large, but would not release their names either.
