From staff reports

CHATHAM — Retired Pittsylvania County Sheriff G. Harold Plaster was presented with a legislative proclamation Tuesday honoring his years of service.

Sen. Robert Hurt, as well as Delegates Danny Marshall, Donald Merricks and Charles Poindexter were on hand for the ceremony held at the Moses Building in Chatham.

Plaster retired in 2007 after 16 years as sheriff and he also was honored for his work with the Virginia State Police for nine years.

Plaster was praised for installing cameras inside police cruisers to increase safety for deputies and for setting up Project Lifesaver, a search and rescue program for people with Alzheimer’s and others forms of dementia.

The resolution noted how Plaster added new positions in the office, expanded the drug unit and drug and homicide task forces, and assigned resource officers at the county’s four high schools.
