Police want to question man about stabbing death

UPDATE: Danville police are looking for Steven Cumberbatch, 46, of Danville, in connection with the Tuesday night stabbing death of Karen Denise Atkins.

Updated 5:22 p.m.: Danville police are looking for Steven Cumberbatch, 46, of Danville, in connection with the Tuesday night stabbing death of Karen Denise Atkins.

Atkins, 43, of Danville, was found on Hamlin Avenue at about 9 p.m., suffering from multiple stab wounds, police said. She was transported to Danville Regional Medical Center, where she died at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police have not named Cumberbatch as a suspect in the case, but a news release from Lt. Mike Mondul calls him a “person of interest.”

Updated 12:21 p.m.: The woman who was found on Hamlin Avenue last night, suffering from multiple stab wounds, has died as a result of her injuries.

Karen Denise Atkins, 43, of Danville, was taken to Danville Regional Medical Center shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Atkins was treated for her injuries, but succumbed to her injuries at about 6:30 a.m. this morning.

Lt. Mike Mondul, of the Danville Police, said in a news release that there is a suspect in the case, but did not release any details about the suspect.

Atkins body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for autopsy.

Original story: Police are investigating a stabbing on Hamlin Avenue that occured shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Responding to a call, police arrived at the 100 block of Hamlin Ave. and found a 43-year-old Danville woman with multiple stab wounds to various parts of her body, says a release from the police department. Danville Fire Department crew and members of the Danville Life Saving Crew transported the victim to Danville Regional Medical Center. Tuesday night she was listed in critical condition, according to the report. Police have a suspect, and the investigation is ongoing as of Wednesday morning.
