Despite all his problems, Virginia Tech Head Football Coach Frank Beamer says he’s pulling for former Virginia Tech Quarterback Michael Vick.
“You hope each and every one of them goes out and does well, represents themselves well, represents this University well,” Beamer said.
But Vick has struggled since leaving Blacksburg – including his latest financial trouble.
“He had it all and he lost a lot of it,” he said. “There’s so much money so quickly, and if you’re not careful you don’t know how to handle it.”
Former Hokie and current NFL player, Vincent Fuller agrees.
“We come into a nice situation, financially, at a young age, and some of us may not necessarily have the maturity in order to handle it,” Fuller said.
But there is some advice Beamer has for the athletes when they leave Blacksburg.
“The advice I give those guys is, deal with those people you trust,” Beamer said.
According to court documents, that’s something Vick may be trying to do by choosing his manager to take care of his finances while he’s in jail.
As for making things right, Beamer says he’s told Vick there’s still time.
“I’ve written him and told him, ‘just think how many kids you can influence in the future.”
And he has faith the former VT star can turn things around.
“I believe in Michael a lot. He’s made some mistakes, but I believe he’s got a good heart. I’m pulling for him to get back.”
He’s pulling for him to get back to the man Beamer knows best.
