Former Henry County sheriff released from prison

MARTINSVILLE — According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator Web site, former Henry County Sheriff Frank Cassell was released Thursday from the United States Penitentiary in Canann, Penn.

Cassell reported to prison Oct. 30 to begin his eight-month sentence.

Cassell was convicted after lying to federal investigators. Prosecutors argued Cassell knew members of his department, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, stole drugs and guns seized as evidence and resold them, but that Cassell looked the other way.

The 70-year-old was still allowed to collect his pension from his time with the Virginia State Police while in prison.

Cassell was sheriff of Henry County from 1992 until he stepped down from his duties in 2006. He had a career with the Virginia State Police before that.
