The Northwest Rockingham County Fire Protection Association has received a $23,592 grant through the 2008 Volunteer Fire Department Fund.
The check will be mailed to Chief James L. Lawrence to be used by the department to
buy needed equipment. The equipment is purchased using matching funds and must be
approved by the Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal.
“For a rural department, it helps out with a low tax base,” said Stan Allen, a longtime volunteer firefighter. “We’ve gotten a lot of money through the grant over the years.”
The Northwest Rockingham County Fire Protection Association serves the Ayersville community between Mayodan and Sandy Ridge. The fire protection association serves a population of 1,500 to 2,000 and responds to about 200 calls per year, most of which are EMS calls, said Allen. Northwest Rockingham County Fire Protection Association has received a total of $110,096.61 from the Volunteer Fire Department Fund in the past 21 years since the program began. This time around, Allen said, the fire protection association has bought a hose, ventilation fan, radios and other equipment for its new fire truck, which was recently ordered. The matching grant allows the association to get double the equipment for the price of one, said Allen.
“Fire-and-rescue organizations protect our communities large and small across North
Carolina, but sometimes their budgets don’t grow with their responsibilities,”
Commissioner of Insurance Jim Long said. “Our emergency service personnel should be supported with the best equipment and supplies needed to do their jobs correctly and safely.”
The General Assembly created the Volunteer Fire Department Fund in 1988 to help volunteer units raise money for equipment and supplies. During Commissioner Long’s tenure in office, the Department of Insurance has distributed more than $57 million to volunteer fire departments across the state.
