Danville introduces computer, electronics recycling program

For those who are not sure what to do with old and used computers and other electronics, the Public Works Department is offering an environmentally responsible solution.

Public Works Director Rick Drazenovich said Thursday the department launched a program July 1 to collect old parts and take them to a recycling center in Mayodan, N.C.

Improperly disposed of electronics are potentially harmful if they’re dumped in landfills because gasses, like those from computer monitors for example, can leak into the ground and eventually into water supplies, he said.

The department will accept most electronics, including computer monitors, televisions, games, microwaves, batteries and cell phones.

“We wanted to provide an avenue for local residents to properly dispose (of their old electronics),” Drazenovich said, adding that the program is in response to numerous inquiries about how to do so.

He added that throwing these items in the trash is a waste of landfill space and a “waste of good recyclable materials.”

Drazenovich also noted that people getting rid of computers should clear all their personal data before doing so.

In addition, he said the department will take equipment from businesses, provided that it’s a reasonable amount.
