Seventh-seeded Averett’s deep run into the USA South Conference Tournament ended with a 1-0 loss to No. 3 seed Ferrum College on Sunday morning at Springwood Park in Burlington, N.C.

Averett’s USA South Conference Tournament run came to an end as the sixth-seeded Cougars fell 8-1 to second-seeded Shenandoah University on Saturday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
Averett finished off a perfect start to its USA South Conference Tournament by upsetting No. 2 seed Meredith with a 4-3 comeback win on Friday afternoon at Springwood Park. The seventh-seeded Cougars also defeated No. 10 seed Mary Baldwin 9-2 to open tournament play earlier in the day.
Averett completed conference play with three consecutive victories and will play No. 10 Mary Baldwin on the first day of the USA South Conference tournament at 9 a.m. Friday in Burlington, N.C. The Cougars (18-20) enter the tournament on a five-game winning streak after sweeping its final regular-season series Tuesday against Southern Virginia 8-0 and 4-1.
Averett (23-16), which trounced Hampden-Sydney 13-0 in the Cougars’ regular-season finale Monday, plays third-seed Greensboro at 1 p.m. Thursday at Burlington Athletic Stadium in the first round.
Guilford junior infielder Jordan Slate had the most perplexed look on his face after he was called out on strikes to lead off the fifth inning Wednesday against Averett. He wasn’t even in the batter’s box when it happened.
The Cougars responded from their 10th one-run loss of the season with an all-around dominating performance in the second contest with a 5-0 victory to salvage a split with Greensboro on Tuesday in USA South action in Danville.
It’s not for a lack of effort, hustle and all-out desire that has hampered both Averett’s men’s and women’s basketball teams during the final stages of the USA South Conference regular season.
Shenandoah guard Dominic Chappell was able to put in an offensive rebound putback falling away with 1.3 seconds left in the second overtime as the Hornets defeated Averett, 85-83, in both teams’ USA South Conference opener Wednesday at the Grant Center.
Former Tunstall standout Kyana Smith scored the go-ahead basket with 1:47 remaining in the contest and recorded her eighth double-double in 10 games as Averett came from behind for a 50-45 victory over Methodist on Wednesday at the Grant Center.

The victory for Averett (1-5) gives the Cougars some life heading into the team’s next contest — a road tilt at High Point, where the Cougars will be asked to slow down Danville native Nick Barbour.
Ke'Von White, a true freshman out of Midlothian, finally had his breakout game on the collegiate ranks, rushing for 217 yards and two scores in the Cougars’ overtime victory last weekend against Methodist.
Long-time Averett volleyball coach Danny Miller was about a good minute into the post-game interview when he remembered something about a game played two weekends ago that he could use as an example to ignite his team. The thought came after the Cougars’ 25-16, 25-11, 21-25, 28-26 victory over Peace on Tuesday in the USA South Conference tournament quarterfinals that was far from perfect. Even after two nearly flawless sets to open the match and a struggle to close things out, there was something he found to carry over into the semifinals.
Inserted in the 66th minute, Sjorén provided the calm, reassuring presence at left forward when she softly lofted a shot that Methodist goalkeeper Sara Altman couldn’t clear that proved to be the game-winner in Averett’s 4-3 victory in Danville.
Maryville College used a big second half to pull away for a win over Averett on Saturday at Thornton Stadium.
Emmanuel, the leader of the defense, and Varner, the defensive signal caller, have been key components when the Cougars have had success on defense. Averett (2-4, 1-2 USA South) has won two of its three road games and hopes to add a third road victory at 1:30 p.m. today at Maryville (1-5, 1-2).
There was a welcomed sight last week against Greensboro for the Averett offensive coaching staff and that was the emergence of a running game. The Cougars were able to pound Greensboro and nearly doubled their rushing total for the season. Averett hopes that carries over to today’s 1:30 p.m. home contest against Christopher Newport University.
Greensboro (0-4, 0-1 USA South) is predicated to running the ball inside and that could help Averett (1-3, 0-1 USA South) get back on the winning track at 1 p.m. today at Jamieson Stadium on the campus of Grimsley High School.
Averett will honor Rick Quintanilla by wearing an “RQ” decal on the helmets during Saturday’s 1 p.m. homecoming game against N.C. Wesleyan in the Cougars’ USA South Conference opener.
Averett scored a season-high six goals in its shutout of Salem College on Tuesday at the Cougar Den.
Averett finished off a perfect weekend in USA South Conference play with a pair of 3-1 wins on Sunday. The Cougars defeated Meredith College (25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17) and then topped host Mary Baldwin College (25-19, 25-13, 18-25, 25-13).
Averett freshman Frantz Joinvil gave the Cougars a game-winner goal for the second contest in a row, this time in a 1-0 win over Berry College in men's soccer on Saturday at the Smith River Sports Complex near Martinsville.
Though there were few bright spots to come from the Cougars’ 63-9 loss to Hampden-Sydney in the team’s season opener, there was the production from its freshmen running backs that keeps the team optimistic heading into Saturday’s home opener against Randolph-Macon (1 p.m. at the Cougar Den).
Averett University freshman Frantz Joinvil’s goal in the 74th minute turned out to be the difference as the Cougars slipped past Emory & Henry College 2-1 in a non-conference road game on Wednesday night.
Averett dispatched Hollins University 3-0 on Tuesday night in non-conference volleyball action at the Grant Center. The Cougars won 25-10, 25-19, 25-21.
