QUESTION: When I drink water or at least eight glasses a day, I get sick to my stomach and cramps. The cramps are very painful and that's one reason why I do not drink much water. What should I do-
ANSWER: Start by only drinking the amount that you are comfortable with. I found out from Dr. Mark Greenawald that the "need" for us to get eight glasses of water a day is a myth that many believe started with an article from 1945!
"Existing studies suggest that adequate fluid intake is usually met through typical daily consumption of juice, milk, food and even caffeinated drinks. Thus, although this is a very popular 'rule,' there is no scientific basis for it. Our fluid requirements vary by time of year, activity level, body size, foods we eat and many other variables," he said.
Do you feel instantly better- You don't have to feel guilt about drinking fewer than eight glasses a day and you can avoid those stomach cramps.
Dr. Greenawald suggests you cut back to a level that allows you to avoid discomfort.
I have been as guilty as you of trying to get my 64 ounces of water. I enjoy keeping a cup at my desk to fill periodically. Drinking plenty of water seems to keep some food cravings at bay but I won't feel guilty anymore if I don't get eight and I hope you won't either.
