Former George Washington teacher earns 6 gold medals at Commonweath Games

Clara Lee Ripley, a recent inductee in the Danville Register & Bee Sports Hall of Fame and a former coach and teacher at George Washington High, won gold medals in all six track & field events she entered at the 20th annual Commonwealth Games of Virginia on July 19 in Roanoke.

Ripley has won 135 medals from competing in 18 different events in the last 15 years, since first competing in the Senior Games and Commonwealth Games of Virginia. The former health and physical education instructor’s most recent results are as follows:

- Long jump (10-3)

- Triple jump (18-8)

- Discus (48-10)

- Shot put (19-7)

- 100 run (18.53)

- 200 run (40.34)

Ripley previously qualified to compete in 10 events this summer between the 2009 Senior Olympics in San Francisco and the State Games of America in Colorado Springs, Colo., but decided to attend neither. She plans to return to action for the Virginia Senior Games in May 2010.
