Danville Braves fend off late rally for 5-4 victory

The Danville Braves (37-16) scored four runs in the sixth inning to power past Elizabethton (35-18) 5-4 Sunday night in a battle between the top two teams in the Appalachian League.

Cory Rasmus (3-2) picked up the win with five innings of no-hit ball. The right-hander gave up two runs in the third inning on three walks, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly.

Christian Bethancourt capped off the sixth inning scoring with a two-run double that brought home Osman Marval and Robbie Hefflinger. Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg doubled to bring home Cory Harrilchak for the inning’s first run and came home on a Marval single.

Matt Weaver, Spanjer-Furstenburg and Harrilchak each finished with two hits.
