Panthers to face Union Pines in 3-A wrestling playoffs

The Morehead, one of three times who tied for the Mid-State 3-A Conference championship, will face off with Union Pines in the first round of the NCHSAA 3-A State Dual playoffs Tuesday night.
Morehead, the No. 2 seed out of the conference, is 11-6 on the season and faces a Union Pines team that won the Cape Fear Valley Conference and stands at 28-2.
Morehead and Union Pines, along with the other first-round match that features South Brunswick (25-5) and Chapel Hill (15-11) will take place at Union Pines High School.
The two winners will meet following first-round action, which gets under way at 7 p.m.
Eastern Guilford (16-2), the No. 2 seed out of the Mid-State Conference, will face Douglas Byrd (8-2), a wild-card entry out of the Cape Fear Valley Conference.
McMichael, which was in line to win the conference just two weeks ago, lost to Eastern Guilford in its final match of the season and then drew No. 3 at a recent meeting.
The Phoenix, who were 10-12 overall, did not have the winning percentage to land a wild-card spot.
Tuesday’s action gets under way at 7 p.m. at Union Pines.
