Former Cougar Mitchell remains uncertain on future plans

Former Rockingham County Cougar pitcher Bryan Mitchell, who was recently selected by the New York Yankees in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft, is making the most of his summer before a decision on his baseball future will be made.

He was selected 495th overall by the New York Yankees day two of the draft.
Mitchell admits he was taking it easy that day, trying not to get too overwhelmed by all the hoopla.
“I was at the Elks Pool when I got the call,” he said. “I didn’t feel like sitting in front of the computer all day and stressing about it.”
Mitchell will not make a firm decision until August. According to the former Cougar, the Yankees are going to monitor him this summer as he pitches in a handful of tournaments.
He is set to pitch in a tournament July 9 in East Cobb, Ga.
“I think it’s an honor to be drafted by the Yankees,” he said. “They have a great organization and a first-class program all the way around.”
This season Mitchell (6-2, 195) was 5-2 with one save and a 0.62 earned run average. He had 87 strikeouts in just 45 innings – including 18 in the Cougars’ first-round playoff loss.
He helped Rockingham to three straight Triad 3-A Conference Tournament championships.
McMichael High School’s Joseph Hughes was selected by the Washington Nationals as the 1192nd pick in the 2009 MLB First-Player Draft Thursday afternoon.
Hughes was the first pick in the 40th round.
The 6-4, 230 right-hander finished the season 10-1 with an earned run average slightly above 1.10. He capped off his senior season with a state championship – the first-ever for McMichael baseball.
Hughes is currently committed to East Carolina University.
