RINGGOLD — Jasmine Walker scored 13 points and the Dan River High girls basketball team used stingy defense to win its Dogwood District opener, defeating William Campbell 57-34 Wednesday night.

Dan River (2-5, 1-0 Dogwood) took control of the contest early, using a 16-4 run to close the second quarter, stretching a 13-10 lead to 29-14. Deidra Glass was responsible for most of that, scoring six points, dishing out two assists and coming up with a few steals.

“It was a big motivation because lately we’ve been going in down,” Dan River coach Deauti Harris said. “So, you don’t want to go into the second half down. I just told them to push it up and keep doing what they’re doing.”

Chaquita Chappell scored 12 points for the Wildcats. Glass added 11 and Mariah Stephens scored 10.

William Campbell (1-4, 0-1 Dogwood) was held without a point for nearly the first seven minutes of the game, but Dan River was only able to build its lead to 10-0. The Generals were able to close the gap to three, at 13-10, within the first three minutes of the second quarter.

“Well, you know, we’re still in the process of learning how to play a little bit,” William Campbell coach Ben Harper said. “We lost our two seniors from last year’s team that kind of kept everything together. They were great in transition and took the wind right out of our sails.”

LeQuesha Miller was the only player for William Campbell to score in double figures, scoring 11 points. Triane Jones added five points for the Generals.

Despite converting 7-of-22 attempts from the free throw line, the Wildcats were pleased to get the first district win.

“It’s a good feeling because we had to boost our motivation,” Harris said. “We’ve been down lately and had a lot of injuries, so this is good to get a win in the Dogwood District.”
