EDEN — Rockingham County scored a pair of runs in the first inning Tuesday night against Morehead and never looked back. Led by a combined two-hitter from Tyler Burchett and Ethan Ellington and a pair of 3-run innings, the Cougars cruised to the easy 8-0 win over the Panthers.
Burchett picked up the win, pitching 5 and 1/3 innings of two-hit ball against the home team. He surrendered four walks while striking out seven. Ellington went the final 1 and 2/3 innings where he gave up no hits, no runs and one walk. He struck out one batter.
Burchett was given a two-run lead even before he took the mound in the opening inning. Josh Munson drove in Brian Widerman with an RBI-single and later scored on a single by Adam John-son off MHS starter Chase Raiford.
Raiford went 5 and 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs (five earned), eight hits and five walks. He struck out three Cougar batters. Teammate Stephen Corcoran went the final 1 and 2/3 where he had one strikeout.
Ellington and Widerman got on base to start the third and RCHS loaded up the bases thanks to two MHS errors on the same play (with Burchett at the plate).
Munson got an RBI the easy way drawing a bases loaded walk that brought in Ellington. Widerman scored on the third MHS error of the inning moments later, while Burchett scored on a sacrifice from Johnson.
Munson had the big hit in the sixth inning as he drove in Widerman with an RBI-double. Both Johnson and Cody Westmoreland both had RBI-singles in the inning.
Leading the RCHS hitting attack was Munson, who went a perfect 3 for 3 in the win. He had two runs and two RBIs.
Both Johnson and Westmoreland contributed with two hits each.
George Mabes (first inning single) and Chris Stanley (third inning single) had the two hits for the home team.
Morehead will be back in action tonight at Bartlett Yancey, while Rockingham travels to Dudley Friday night.
Both games will start at 7 p.m.
