Averett’s St. John earns USA South Rookie of the Week honor

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett University freshman Michael St. John was selected as the USA South Conference men’s basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday.

St. John, a freshman guard from Appomattox, averaged 10.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.3 assists per contest as the Cougars posted a 1-2 record during the holiday break. In a 69-64 loss to St. Mary’s College (Md.), St. John contributed seven points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist. In a 76-57 win over John Jay College, St. John totaled 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

In the Cougars’ 71-69 overtime loss to Lynchburg College on Saturday, St. John tallied a career-high 11 points, four rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block.

Averett returns to action against Ferrum College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Grant Center.
