Published: March 25, 2009
Averett University senior guard Jonathan Rumley was named a Division III First Team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Rumley was also voted as the NABC South District Player of the Year.
Rumley, a 6-foot-3 native of Winston-Salem, N.C., averaged 17.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 6.0 assists during his senior season for Averett, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Rumley was named the USA South Conference Player of the Year and was the conference tournament MVP. He also received third-team all-region honors from D3Hoops.com.
During Rumley’s three seasons at Averett, the Cougars won two regular-season titles and three straight USA South Conference tournament championships. Averett also made three NCAA tournament appearances.
“We are all really excited for Jonathan as this an incredible honor,” Averett coach Jimmy Allen said. “In his time at Averett Jonathan has been an unselfish team-first player and has been extremely versatile as well. He has worked very hard to improve his game each year and has been a great leader for our basketball program. This type of recognition is without question well deserved.”
A two-time USA South First Team and three-time All-Tournament Team selection, Rumley set numerous records at Averett. He holds the school’s career record for steals average (2.3) and his 79 steals and 2.7 steals average during his junior season are also Averett records. Rumley also holds the single-game records for free throws made (18) and free throws attempted (24) and shares the records for assists (13) and steals (7).
Rumley finished his career fifth on Averett’s all-time scoring list with 1,186 points and was only the eighth Cougar to reach the 1,000-point mark. Rumley is fifth all-time in rebounds with 511 boards, owns the school’s sixth-highest career scoring average (15.0 ppg) and is seventh in career rebound average (6.5). His 527 points during his senior season ranks sixth among Averett’s all-time single-season totals. Rumley is also only one of two Averett men’s basketball players to record a triple-double.
Rumley is only the second Cougar selected as an NABC All-American. Demarcus Morrison was a second-team selection in 1998. Joining Rumley on the 2009 team are Jimmy Bartolotta (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Darnell Braswell (DeSales University), Sean Burton (Ithaca College), Santini Lancioni (Richard Stockton College), Kent Raymond (Wheaton College), Jeff Skemp (UW Patteville) and Nate Stahl (Capital University).

Just a quick note to underscore the obvious: that Jonathan Rumley is a very fine young man who has been a stellar athlete at Averett College for 4 years and has been a very commendable role model for his teammates, his school, and the community. His presence and his influence will be missed when he graduates to bigger and better things. This young man is headed for greatness in life, and is going to make a real difference in peoples lives and in his sport is he continues. He is also typical of the good scholar-athletes and quality people that Coach Allen and Averett University has brought to our town, and who contribute positively to their college and college town communities. Thanks, Mr. Rumley, for four very admirable years at Averett and in representing yourself and the university so well!
