Averett women cruise to victory over Peace

After building a first-half lead, Averett University cruised in the second half to a 48-35 victory over Peace College on Saturday night in USA South Conference action at the Grant Center.

Averett (4-3, 1-1 USA South) scored the final eight points of the first half to take a 25-16 advantage into the locker rooms. Peace (3-5, 0-3 USA South) cut the Cougars’ lead to five early in the second half, but the Pacers didn’t get any closer. Averett pushed its lead to double digits midway through the period and never looked back.

Junior Ashley Washington led the way for Averett, scoring 16 points while grabbing 15 rebounds. Sophomore Deandra Brown added nine points and five steals off the bench. Senior Kristyn Wharton chipped in with nine rebounds.

Leanne Horne was the top scorer for Peace wth 12 points.

The Cougars outrebounded Peace 49-35.

Averett returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Ferrum College at 5:30 p.m. at the Grant Center.
