Averett University freshman Mike Ferrell, 19, a guard on the men’s basketball team and a Halifax County High School graduate, has been moved to an intensive care unit at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., a hospital spokesperson said Saturday afternoon.
The hospital, which is verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level I adult trauma center, would not release any further information about Ferrell’s condition because of privacy concerns.
Lt. M.T. White Jr. of the Danville Police Department confirmed a student attacked another student Friday at the Grant Center on Averett University’s North Campus. He was unable to identify the students involved, but said one student was transported to Danville Regional Medical Center and later transported to Wake Forest.
Ferrell’s former teammate, Rakeem Davis, 19, a freshman who numerous team and university sources said attacked Ferrell in a hallway of the Grant Center on Friday, has had his bio removed from Averett’s Web site and his playing number reassigned.
Possible criminal charges are pending the outcome of an investigation being conducted by the police department, White said.
Averett, trailing Christopher Newport University by half a game for the USA South Conference lead, hosts CNU at 4 p.m. today.
ORIGINAL STORY
Averett University freshman forward Rakeem Davis has been kicked off the team after attacking a teammate during practice Friday in Danville, according to numerous sources.
Mike Ferrell, a freshman guard and Halifax County High School graduate, was in “undetermined condition” and being treated in the emergency room of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center late Friday night as a result of the attack, a spokesperson from the hospital said.
The 6-foot-4, 191-pound Davis, who had a history of being picked on by his teammates, punched Ferrell in the face while the two were in a hallway at the Grant Center, numerous sources said. Ferrell fell to the ground after hitting his head on a cinderblock wall and Davis jumped on top of Ferrell and hit him twice more until being restrained by at least one teammate, a source said.
“Obviously we take an incident like this very seriously,” Averett University Public Relations Director Susan Huckstep wrote in an e-mail sent to the Register & Bee late Friday night. “We will be looking into the situation to determine what happened. Right now our immediate thoughts and prayers are with the players and their families. We will provide more details as they become available.”
The numerous university and team sources that spoke to the Register & Bee requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the incident.
Averett University Athletics Director Sam Ferguson and men’s basketball coach Jimmy Allen did not return multiple phone calls seeking comment.
Davis, 19, of Chesapeake, has appeared in 20 games for the Cougars this season. He is averaging 1.5 points and one rebound per game. The 6-4, 211-pound Ferrell, 19, who has appeared in 13 games, is averaging 1.3 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.
Averett, which is half a game behind Christopher Newport University for the USA South Conference lead, hosts CNU today and Shenandoah University on Sunday. The Cougars close the regular season at N.C. Wesleyan on Friday and will begin the conference tournament by hosting a quarterfinal game Feb. 24 against an opponent to be determined.

I think attack is a chosen word for journalistic purposes, it was a fight, one with a pretty serious outcome nonetheless it was a fight. And if name calling, bullying was involved, any human can only take so much of that before they are going to snap out.
What amazes me is that truthbetold originally brought up the issue of race and now cannot figure out why everyone got so upset…Maybe because you offended people duh. I raised my eyebrows when you made a comment about educated African Americans. Well, I am working on my Master’s Degree and I am black. Please don’t have a heart attack on that one.
To the Averett students-
I hope the issue gets resolved between the players. With all the violence that’s being committed at our universities, many due to name calling and such, I can only hope that this is not swept up under the rug. This story happened too close to home. Good luck on your studies!
Where are you getting that i don’t care about humans?
I think you just attacked the wrong poster.
For your information, your quote is from William Shakespeare. You learn about him in English Literature, not world history. I’m not going to argue with you because I think that’s your sole intention of posting here. I have better things to do than argue with someone who cares little about humans. Maybe you should run for a government office since you are so “up” on your world history. Have a nice day!
Oh sorry truth….if you had any education at all….you would have recognized that as an old quote. However, I did paraphrase it a touch..the correct version is:
Me thinketh he protesteth too much.
thank you for your words of ignorance of world history.
You are very amusing.
I am non-traditional, white Averett student, and it seems to me that you are more interested in trying to sound intelligent than worrying about the life of a human being. The one thing you need to understand is that your messages scream one thing - uneducated! Don’t tell me I’m stupid either because I have a 3.9 GPA to back up my intelligence. I’m the one who walks the hallways at Averett. I see what’s happening. There are as many black students enrolled at Averett as there are white students. So before you start trashing others, make sure you know the facts.
Wikipedia says, “When male cougars encounter each other, they hiss and spit, and may engage in violent conflict if neither backs down”
You can call me anything you want to but it’s really funny that the two of you are the ones so adamant about making this entire “Comment Response” forum a race issue.
People like you will never be part of the solution because you refuse to look at the problem. And you, ‘newnonsense”, as if the content of your responses are not ignorant enough, you put the cherry on top with, “Me think he protest too much to be innocent”.
I personally thank you for exposing your intellect.
And it’s so enlightening that you have a need to share your political preferences (just another way to express YOUR racism I guess), I hope you will be just as satisfied with President Biden.
Your ignorance only surpasses your racism and I guess you didn’t get it the first time:
I DON’T CARE
Yes, he’s a racist…there are many of them out there. They cannot help but be easily exposed. All you have to do is challenge them and they come all undone.
Me think he protest too much to be innocent.
We have a black president, and I voted for him. Thank God the good old boys are out of power. It’s time for racism to die. The civil war is over. Your side lost. Now move on.
Well by your answer you just proved that “newsnonsense” was correct in that you are a RACIST! According to your little comment it is a shocker that African Americans are educated…You need to get out of the 60s. Think God you represent the minority of white people.
