GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina A&T sophomore safety Justin Ferrell, a George Washington High graduate, was named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference first team by conference coaches and sports information directors.
The honor marks the first time since 2005 that the Aggies were represented on the MEAC first team. N.C. A&T freshman running back Mike Mayhew was named MEAC Rookie of the Year, senior defensive end Jarrell Herring was also selected to the first team and sophomore defensive back Quay Long received a second-team selection.
“All of these young men definitely received well-deserved honors today,’’ North Carolina A&T head coach Alonzo Lee said in a release. “To have the rookie of the year in the conference, and to have two sophomores make the all-conference team shows we have a bright future ahead of us. We’re not going to stop here. We’re going to keep doing the right things to make this program even more successful.”
Ferrell led the conference with six interceptions. He picked off two passes in the fourth quarter to preserve an Aggies win against Howard on Oct. 24 and his two picks against N.C. Central led to 10 Aggies points in a 23-17 overtime victory on Oct. 3.
N.C. A&T finished the season 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the MEAC.
Ferrell was named to the Western Valley District second team his senior season at GW and was also a standout performer in track and field. He teamed with David Wilson, Travis Tarpley and DeVaughn Benion to win first place in the Northwest Region and sixth place at the Group AAA state meet in the 4x100 relay.
