President Obama on Thursday proposed a huge ex-pansion of the government’s role in making college more affordable and putting it within reach of more students.

President Barack Obama’s first federal budget lays out the most far-reaching agenda for American life since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. But paying for it by having upper-income earners shoulder much of the cost quickly provoked cries of class warfare in Congress.

Trillion is the new billion. No longer is it a billion here and a billion there that add up to real money. Swap a “t” for the “b” if you want a measure of what’s at stake under President Barack Obama’s first spending plan.
