The race for governor continues to tighten, according to a new survey.

Republican Bob McDonnell had the support of 48 percent, to 43 percent for Democrat R. Creigh Deeds, according to a survey released today by Public Policy Polling.

The poll of 576 likely Virginia voters was taken Friday through Monday. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

The pollster said McDonnell continues to lead because of his strong support from independents and because he has stronger backing from core supporters. Among Republicans, 96 percent back McDonnell, while 82 percent of Democrats back Deeds.

McDonnell led 49 percent to 42 percent in the pollster’s August survey. He led 51 percent to 37 percent two months ago.
