There is now interest in forming a new American Legion Post in the Eden area. Several veterans in the Eden area do not feel the great youth programs offered by the American Legion are being presented to our youth.

This is in response to the recent letter reference to the professionalism of the services by Rockingham County EMS and emergency services.

On behalf of the Dan River Basin Association, I would like to thank Miller Brewing Co. for its support of clean water and heritage preservation in Eden and the Dan River region.

In July, my late grandfather, Eugene T. Walker, was picked up due to terminal illness. And the remarks that where made from the paramedic were very unprofessional and degrading to my grandfather.

I am writing this letter in response to Lisa Shumake-Wright on her feelings about what the media is doing to Sarah Palin. Well, they are doing the same thing to her as they are doing to Barack Obama. Did you expect them not to? That’s what most of the media folks do.

I am a registered Independent, and now I know why. It is absolutely absurd what the media is doing to Sarah Palin.

So next time you enjoy scrambled eggs, an ice cream cone or a PB&J, be thankful that you won’t be heading to the ER just for taking a bite. More importantly, please get in touch with Sens. Richard Burr and Elizabeth Dole and our other elected representatives in Washington – they need to know how important increased funding for food allergy research is.

Working together, we can decrease the homeless animal rate…. Helping God’s creatures that can’t help themselves is the right thing to do.

I would like to commend the city of Eden for its security of blocking off N.C. 14 for the motorcades that passed through Eden on Aug. 20. However, I was very surprised that the city officials allowed the wasting of all that fuel.

What can I say? I am so proud of you! I know you were so nervous, but you stood. After all you’ve been through, you stood strong. I had to tell anybody and everybody about my mom. I wish I had half of your courage.

I write to thank Coach Mike Burchell for serving as a fine role model for the young people who have participated on the Holmes Middle School football team.

Due to a decision at Holmes Middle School, I will no longer be football coach. The administration has decided to go in a different direction.

We have donated eight DVDs to the public library – available countywide – and will soon donate a DVD to each high school. We encourage folks to check it out and watch it with their families.

Citizens of Rockingham County: As we’re sure you’re aware, we are in the midst of a fundraising campaign to finance two 20-foot by 40-foot brick sculpture murals by local artist Brad Spencer. These murals will adorn the front of the Judicial Center planned to open in 2010 and will depict the county’s past, present and future. To raise these funds, committee members are selling engraved brick pavers for $100, $200 and $500, depending on the paver size and design.

I am going to boycott the Olympic games and I won’t be drinking Coke any longer. China has failed to live up to their commitments to the International Olympic Committee.
Their record on human rights has not improved.

There are many people in our area who lack important literacy skills. However, there are also dedicated people in our community, creating events targeted at improving these poor rates in our area. I wanted to take a moment to tell the community about one such event held earlier this summer.

I would like to let the people of Eden know just what kind of people they have working and living in their community. This past Sunday my wife and I had the opportunity of visiting the new Tractor Supply Co. on Van Buren Road. We arrived about 5:15 and, after meandering through the store, ended up buying a few pet items for our dogs.

May the Lord bless you in a special way and please know that I will pass this good deed along.

It pains me that nowhere in the bickering and confusion about what to do with Eden’s Draper and Douglass schools were the children who attend them or learning objectives that might be accomplished there discussed.

I totally agree with the gentleman’s letter on Tuesday and I’m happy to learn that I’m not the only unhappy camper regarding the change of crossword puzzles.

Though I do not live in his district, I would like to urge every one who can to vote to re-elect Tim Scales to the Rockingham County Board of Education.

No doubt, you cater to your educated readers, but someone must ask that consideration be given to bring back the puzzle most readers can complete facilely, even if it means having two puzzles. Move something over to make room for it.

I would like to commend Hardee’s for its continued good work for the senior citizens of the area. It is wonderful to see so many seniors come out and enjoy the great country music and bluegrass music.

I want to thank everyone at Walnut Cove Healthcare for the loving care that was shown to Aunt Bessie Stultz during her stay there from February until the Lord called her home June 27. You went the extra mile in meeting her needs.

This letter is written in response to the comments made by Mr. Billy Vestal in the June 25 issue of the Eden Daily News concerning the municipal service districts. It was reported in the newspaper article that on June 17 the Eden City Council voted unanimously to approve the municipal service districts in the old Leaksville and Draper sections of Eden.

Rockingham County’s theatergoers of Eden, Madison, Mayodan, Reidsville, Stoneville and Wentworth love the live stage experience. We’ll travel throughout the Piedmont Triad, Virginia and New York City to keep up our role as the audience.

It is unfortunate some cannot accept Black Family Day after 12 years. Allow me to disabuse your minds of the notion that the city of Reidsville (government) supports this event.

With former Speaker of the House Jim Black in prison for accepting bribes in a restaurant bathroom, one might think that N.C. Democrats would make playing by campaign finance rules a top priority. Not so for the Rockingham County Democratic Party.
