North Carolina is already seeing one of the most active flu seasons in recent record keeping, an early indication of how widespread the swine flu pandemic could become.

Is the county highway department in a conspiracy with the local tire dealers? Recent actions cast suspicion in that direction.

What about the industries that have been operating and providing jobs in the county for many years—over 80 in Karastan’s case. Where is our support?

While Members of Congress want to respond quickly to Americans’ concerns about the economy and employment, passing the Employee Free Choice Act would represent a terrible step backwards.

Rockingham County Help for Homeless Inc. thanks the many people who made donations during Reidsville’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast celebration. In particular, we thank the Honorable Pat Morgan and Rockingham County Reads, 2009! for being the driving force behind this effort. 

The big news on Thursday (Feb. 19) was that five Republican governors were considering turning down money from the president’s stimulus bill, but they were grandstanding. Not one of them actually refused the money in President Obama’s bill.

On Dec. 18 at the City of Reidsville’s Christmas dinner, numerous people were in attendance, which included our own Honorable Mayor James Festerman and members of the Reidsville City Council.

The Feb. 9 meeting of the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners heard from a number of citizens who are very much concerned about the county’s ongoing property revaluation.

As expertly demonstrated by the commissioners during the recent public hearing concerning the recent property revaluation, I am starting a class on how anyone can become a county commissioner.

I consider it a victory in my life also, to have witnessed it first hand. So, thank you, Rockingham County school board, for getting it right this time!

I am so outraged that there are so many abandoned buildings in this area. With the economy so bad it is very hard for someone to buy or lease buildings

Congratulations again, Rockingham County. You have hammered together all year with new Habitat for Humanity homeowners in Eden, Reidsville and Stoneville.

No one is ever a loser who stands for what is good and right. We don’t need more alcohol, but less. As a matter of fact, we don’t need any to know how to socialize and enjoy life. Jesus Christ is who we need. Still praying daily for those in authority in our city who “we voted in to represent us.”

Several citizens have contacted the Olde Leaksville Merchants and city of Eden to inquire why there are no Christmas lights on Washington Street this year.

As a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, I would like to thank everyone who participated in Reidsville’s 26th Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Volunteers from area churches and scout troops helped serve and deliver meals.

We need to stop this before it gets out of control.

Recently, a letter to the editor appeared in the Eden Daily News and the Reidsville Review regarding remarks that I supposedly made at an October meeting of the Rockingham County Partnership for Economic Development and Tourism. The information that has since circulated with respect to this meeting is simply incorrect. In this letter, it is my intention to correct the confusion created by an uninformed interpretation of the Vehicle Miles Travel tax (VMT), and of statements I made pertaining to it.

Hopefully next year, the Leaksville merchants will take the time to pay respect to all the veterans who have so proudly served their country!

Our objective was to bring Red home safe to his loving family. Even though we did not meet our objective, I believe Red is home now and safe in God’s arms.

In the Oct. 16 Eden Daily News, State Rep. Nelson Cole, a Democrat along with some state Transportation Department people, met and discussed with the Economic and Tourism Development group the hardships of the DOT in not having the proper funding to do the proposed projects in the coming years.

There was no enlightening news in the story “Opie, Andy back Obama…“ which ran Oct. 30.  Many people enjoy the old “Andy Griffith Show” reruns as I do, but our citizens are smart enough to know that these actors are not the characters they played on TV more than 40 years ago, and they never were.

This letter is in response to Mr. Anthony “Tyrone” Scales’ letter regarding the Morehead High School football program

Like most ordinary folk, I do not understand the thought process that goes into making most government decisions—be they federal, state, or local. The rhyme and reason usually escape me. With that said, would someone please explain why the Reidsville city manager and mayor seem bent on causing the closure of one of Reidsville ‘s most prominent, beneficial and long-established businesses—Settle Street Station.

Thursday and Friday night football through the eyes of players and supporters of Morehead High School is depressing. Morale is as far down as it can get. There is talent on these teams.

In response to the letter written by Anthony Scales, better known by Eden residents and Morehead football fans as Tyrone Scales, I would like to give a different view of the current program and its staff.

Someone is taking Obama/Biden signs in my neighborhood of Courtland Park in Reidsville. While I am not a supporter of the Obama campaign, I would like to urge the persons responsible to stop infringing on the free speech rights of others.

The Eden community had very high expectations for the Morehead High School football program this season. Over the years, the attendance along with community support has been great in coming out to a Friday night football game.

I want to thank all the folks who were associated with Madison’s Third Annual Heritage Festival this past Saturday. It was a huge success.

I take issue with the last two editorials that have appeared in the Media General newspapers because of accusations of the provincialism in each municipality and their alleged unwillingness to work together.

I was amazed at the kindness shown by these people, who refused any compensation for their work. This certainly speaks well for this establishment and for the staff employed there.
