Saving a planet in peril
To the editor:
As I’m sure we’re all aware, Congress recently took a giant leap toward a clean energy economy by passing the American Clean Energy and Security Act. I am writing to express both relief and gratitude in seeing our elected officials taking a stand to address the climate crisis while rebuilding our economy.
The bill aims to repower America with clean, renewable energy that will protect the environment, create jobs in our community and put America on the cutting edge of sustainable technology.
The primary way the bill does this is through investments in clean energy to create jobs that are labor intensive and cannot be outsourced.
Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Fifth District, is continuing to fight for the needs of Southside Virginia by voting for the American Clean Energy and Security Act, which will help our communities take the lead in America’s new, green economy while bringing many well-paying jobs that are desperately needed.
Because of the efforts of representatives like Tom Perriello, the bill is now moving to the U.S. Senate. I urge Sens. Mark Warner and Jim Webb to strengthen the bill and deliver on the promise of a clean energy future.
We need this kind of bold leadership to recharge our economy, put thousands of Virginians back to work and protect future generations from global warming.

Us “do gooders” just like to breathe some clean air that doesn’t come directly from a smokestack. As to the liberal crack, I am far, far from that. Just practical, balance the options, choose the winning side. Hey, its a gamble, but its one on the side of caution. Let’s just call it hedging a bet…...if I’m right we all benefit, if you are…..heck we’re all dead anyway…........
watchman; if you wish to continue your delusion that this piece of crap is about anything but taxes and control, have at it. I just wish you liberal do-gooders would leave the rest of us out of your grand schemes to make life perfect.
I have always said that they would tax the Air that we breath if they could figure out a way. Guess they have. LOL LOL
Oh so we can’t trust the government estimates but we are to trust Rush’s? Please. Maybe global warming can be traced to his hot air.
Since when do we set US policy on what China does? We can’t control what they do. They use child labor. Should we write laws off the books on child labor because “China does it….“
Action by the U.S. is crucial to putting pressure on China and India to become part of the world effort to address the climate crisis. One guarantee: China and India will not cap their carbon emissions unless the U.S., the largest emitter in the West, moves first. We need to enact this bill to make sure that America, and not China, becomes the leader in new energy technologies that will create millions of new jobs and be needed worldwide over the next decade.
Congressional Republicans requested a CBO analysis of the bill that shows an average cost around 48 cents per day for the average household in 2020 ($175 per year) – 18 times smaller than what the House GOP’s been claiming for months – and still not including efficiency savings.
Two things:
1) If you trust the government to predict the actual cost of anything it does you are an idiot.
2) Even if all of this works…it is only going to change the average temp. by 1/10th of one degree celcius over the NEXT 100 YEARS.
Can you really tell the difference between 90 and 90.1?
And some of us realize that global temperatures have been falling since the turn of the century. That is precisely why the war cry has been changed from “Global Warming!!!!~!“ to “Climate Change!!!“.
Some of us also realize that this planet has been alternately warming and cooling since it was a planet, since long before man appeared, long before SUV’s appeared.
Some of us realize that sunspot activity, and other changes in the sun, have a lot more to do with our climate than do the cars we drive.
Some of us realize that manufacturing has, by and large, moved to places like China and India, which have told us to take our cap and trade and shove it you know where. The resulting prosperity has enabled them to buy cars, the Hummer being a favorite in China. Their environmental regulations are nowhere as strict as ours, and the problem will only worsen as some manufacturers left here will relocate there to escape the punitive effects of this bill, resulting in a net increase in global pollution.
Some of us realize that Al Gore and others stand to reap millions trading carbon credits. That doesn’t prove that their motives are less than pure, but it does raise a few questions.
In short, some of us realize that this bill will destroy manufacturing and other US businesses, cause increased unemployment, and result in more net worldwide emissions, not less.
God save us from the Obamanable Snowjob.
It is amazing to me how some people can read the dribble that comes out of the likes of Hannity and Rush. Whats even more amazing is that some people buy it!
For all the “chicken littles” out there who think the sky is falling in take the time to really read the act.
Opponents of the Clean Energy and Security Act, many of them so stuck in the past that they don’t even acknowledge the scientific reality of global warming, are trying to bully consumers with the same old solution-free scare tactics. They warn of outrageous increases in energy costs based on distortions and discredited studies. Both the EPA and the Congressional budget office say that, under the Act, the average household will pay about 12 cents more a day, the cost of brewing a pot of coffee. That’s nothing next to the costs of doing nothing, which would be beyond calculation.
This act wll help lead the way to energy independence and jobs!
Don’t critisize the messenger. Her points were right on the mark.
Anthropogenic climate change is a scam of the first magnitude. Jessica can be forgiven if she is 12 years old but otherwise she has indeed been duped. This bill has nothing to do with climate change and everything to do with more government controls. As for me I am still awaiting the next ice age which was promised a few short years ago. In the meantime I’m stocking up on incandescent light bulbs so I won’t have to deal with those mercury filled twisty ones being forced on us by Obama and Perriello.
RE: Jessica N. Evans Letter.
Dupe: one that is easily deceived or cheated, a fool.
Ms. Evans, we are all now a little more stupid for having read your letter.
Great letter.
