Mondul for sheriff
To the editor:
I hope that the citizens will take a good look at the three candidates running for Danville sheriff. I wish I lived in the city so that I could cast my vote for Mike Mondul.
I met him under strange circumstances. Why strange? Had it not been for the death of my best friend, Deputy Frankie Betterton, on May 17, 2002, Mondul and I may not have met.
It was Betterton’s death that led me to do a television show at the Danville Police Department called “Behind the Shield,” which I have been doing for about five years now. It led me to explore why people want to be in law enforcement.
The physical danger is just one area that can be stressful. Other aspects of the job can take a toll. For example: Why do they do a job that subjects them to verbal abuse from a resident when he doesn’t get his way? How do they endure constant criticism when they’re expected to satisfy citizens, the courts, attorneys, local government leaders, the news media and yes, even the criminals? These are just a few. I want people to have a better understanding of how difficult a life in law enforcement can be.
Mondul was one of the first officers I got to know when I started going to the police department. We became friends, and a great friendship emerged from that.
Today, I see a man devoted to his job, family and community. His education and background alone is enough to elect him. I was honored when he asked me to serve on the Mondul for Sheriff Committee. And I stand by everything we have done and will continue to do if you elect Mike Mondul as the city of Danville’s next sheriff Nov. 3.
