For Martin

To the editor:

After observing the recent unfolding of the commonwealth’s attorney campaigns happening in Danville, attending several debates, civic functions and researching the candidates career histories, it has become apparent to me which hopeful is truly most qualified to best serve this city.

James Martin seemed on several occasions to be the only candidate with clear plans and ideas on how to make “a good thing better” as he puts it. It was Martin who originally proposed the idea of a drug court for Danville, which would allow non-violent offenders to work toward getting help rather than clogging the system and costing us all more money.

Also, his proposals of vertical prosecution, which keeps the same prosecutor working on a case throughout its processes so that a case is prosecuted by someone who is actually familiar with the case makes far more sense, and is being done already by surrounding commonwealth’s attorneys offices. It is a tribute to Martin’s character that he has run a clean, positive campaign, he has not lost his temper or spoken down to another candidate, and simply seems to be the most level-headed and mature of the three.

It is also apparent that Martin doesn’t have anything to gain by acquiring this position in order to further his career, but to do a job that he believes in doing right. I find his character, career, and potential to serve his community commendable, and will be voting so on Nov. 3.
