It was only a dance
Just a little FYI for those who know nothing about the 5th grade prom but from what they read in the paper, “Dancing the night away,” (May 31, page A1).
Bad headline
To refer to a man who killed a woman and then committed suicide as the “victim” in your headline, “Victim in shooting had criminal past,” (June 4, page A1), is terrible journalism.
Surprise, Danville’s a generous city
On Saturday, I served a booth at the Danville Community Market. This was done in an effort to raise money for my Eagle Scout project. In preparation, I spent the prior week making grocery lists, baking and getting organized for the sale.

Thanks to Marshall, Merricks, Hurt
First, I would like to thank Delegates Danny Marshall and Donald Merricks and Sen. Robert Hurt for helping me and my Yorktowne Cabinetry co-workers.

Writer: House of Hope deserves a chance
I have read with interest as the citizens of this area have sounded off about House of Hope’s move to the downtown area. In larger areas, homeless shelters tend to mingle in with mainstream life.
Marshall backed
Kudos to Del. Danny Marshall and his work to protect the Yorktowne Cabinetry workers! It is interesting that Seward Anderson supports the creation of “rapid response teams,” which the governor could dispatch to areas hit hard by economic downturns to guide displaced workers “through the red tape” of accessing benefits.
Stoplight needed
Regarding the fatalities that occurred on May 30 at the intersection of Old Richmond Road and Route 726 — and as a survivor of an accident in which I was struck by an individual running the stop sign at this same intersection — I can only ask one question: What is it going to take for the state to put a stoplight at this intersection?

Beware of uranium’s Midas touch
I am so frustrated by our populace’s belief in the uranium mining “study.”

State,nation need area’s uranium
I wholeheartedly support the mining of uranium at Coles Hill. While people keep using scare tactics and misinformation to stir up fear, these fears remain unfounded.
Nation’s gone loco
It’s hard to believe the story about the Oklahoma City druggist who shot and killed a robber in his store. It seems a man wearing a mask entered a store, pointed a handgun at him and demanded money. He went to the register, pulled out his own handgun and shot and killed the robber.

Walter Coles an asset to Pittsylvania
For the last two years, I’ve listened to the renewed controversy over whether the Coles Hill uranium deposit should be developed. It’s the same sound and fury many of us had to endure 25 years ago. What prompts me to speak up are these ridiculous attacks on Walter Coles.
Let them be kids
A fifth grade “prom” — complete with prom dresses and high heels? Oh, please — when is this nonsense of encouraging our children to grow up early going to stop?

Victims of crime
Someone recently broke in my home — my private space where I provide for my special needs son. Today, someone violated my personal space, but ultimately, someone upset my autistic child’s routine. Someone tampered with my child’s world — his safe haven.
Community’s generosity aids homeless
While I cannot answer for House of Hope, I can answer any questions about CUFM/The Homeless Shelter on Claiborne Street, “Questions to ask House of Hope officials,” (May 29, page A8).

Leave our hotel out of the shelter fight
I’m one of the owners of Hotel Leeland. Since the House of Hope homeless shelter fight, somehow we have been included.
Torture ‘un-American’
When I first heard about torturing prisoners by waterboarding, I couldn’t figure out what the procedure was.

Obama failing to protect our nation
Recently, I was very disappointed to see top-secret documents displayed in papers and on TV that detailed the process for utilizing what is known as “enhanced interrogation techniques” that included waterboarding three prisoners. I

Questions to ask House of Hope officials
I attended last week’s forum at Galileo Magnet High School and I heard the citizens of Danville talking to one another about House of Hope.

We need uranium project
Before these noisy, anti-everything folks run off this multi-billion dollar uranium mining project, I’d like to point out what a great development this can be for our whole region.
Compassion needed for our fellow men
In response to, “Shelter move ignites debate,” (May 16, page A1), concerning the House of Hope homeless shelter, I was really disappointed to read this article, because I think homeless people are as good as anyone else.

I just read an article entitled “Unintended consequences” regarding the changes hinted at or threatened by the credit card companies in the wake of recent credit card reform legislation.

Nation borrowing its way to oblivion
Another $89 billion has been added to this year’s federal deficit, and 46 cents of every dollar spent by the government will have to be borrowed in 2010!

Nation borrowing its way to oblivion
Another $89 billion has been added to this year’s federal deficit, and 46 cents of every dollar spent by the government will have to be borrowed in 2010! I don’t know which is the sadder commentary: the elected officials who are draining this nation down to nothing or the people who don’t care enough to stop it.
